It was only in 1973 that vines were first planted in this fabulous climate – in vinous terms, that is young, young, young. Yet in relatively short time, not only has the region put New Zealand wine on the map, its influence worldwide has been enormous, as the flagship Sauvignon Blancs have carried all before them. And now excellent Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are repeating the process, allied to aromatic varieties such as Pinot Gris and Grüner Veltliner. One of THE great success stories.
