Côte-Rôtie, Château de Montlys, Christophe Semaska, 2017

£42.50

The Syrah grape (Shiraz, down under) is known for making relatively powerful wines. However, in this most northern appellation of the Rhône valley, it takes on a silky, sensuous character, becoming almost akin to a great red burgundy, displaying the elegance which one normally associates with that of the Pinot Noir. Its velvet texture complements a bouquet of violets and hints of black pepper, giving this wine all the hallmarks of great Côte-Rôtie.

Domaine Christophe Semaska

Every so often, we arrive in a cellar to taste…and the results leave us absolutely gasping in admiration. Sometimes it’s a grower we know well; on other occasions, it can be someone new, and we know not what to expect. This was the case when we first met Christophe Semaska in 2010, blowing us away with his 2009 Côte-Rôtie.
