Château Laforge Grand Cru, Saint-Emilion, 2011

£34.00

Jonathan bought Laforge in 1998, making it the third of his acquisitions, an addition to Teyssier and Le Dôme. Of all the wines that he makes, this is perhaps the most opulent and juicy – there’s a density and succulence to the Merlot (92%) that comes from low yields (30 hl/ha).

JCP Maltus

In the 1990s, our view was that Saint-Emilion’s fame was based firmly on the great historical pedigree of the town – names such as Ausone, Cheval Blanc, Figeac, Canon, and Angélus. We had yet to encounter Mr Jonathan Maltus, and his 1996 bottle of a wine he called ‘Le Dôme’. Wow, one hell of a bottle, someone clearly knew exactly what they were doing, both in the vineyard, and in the cellar.
