Domaine Bachelet-Monnot
It was on a Burgundy visit in 2010 that we were tipped off about a couple of young hot-shot brothers who were making big waves, especially with their whites. A tasting was duly arranged, and we exited the cellar with the thought that, if anything, their reputation was even higher than the rumours had led us to believe.
Tucked away in Dezize-lès-Maranges, at the very southern-most tip of the Côte de Beaune, this estate only came into being back in 2005. At that point, Bachelet brothers Marc and Alexandre were able to collate various family holdings (approximately 10 hectares), and, in effect, put them under one roof. And they were able to increase volume in 2011, when their father asked them to take over his chunk of vines. Quality is now stellar, and little wonder that it’s become one of our easiest buying decisions of the calendar year: we ask for ‘x’ amount…and receive about half of that. We console ourselves that the rest of the world is in the same boat.
